In January, the joints are jumpin’ with live music in Elizabeth City

On an L-shaped corridor encompassing Main and Poindexter Streets and Colonial Avenue, live music in Elizabeth City abounds.

 

Uphill BandOn Friday, January 11, as part of the ‘City Sounds Series’ at Arts of the Albemarle (516 E. Main St.; 252-338-6455), local favorite Uphill will bring its unique mix of twangy, Carolina ‘Swampland’ blues and revitalized covers originating from Chicago, the Mississippi Delta and Texas to AoA’s Maguire Theatre. Formed in 2005, the four-member Uphill captures the essence of all-American blues via Adam “Deacon Blues” Nixon’s guitar riffs, harmonica, and blues harp; Chris “Catdaddy” Palenstrant’s keyboard; Isaiah Hunter’s drums; and Sonny Morgan’s bass. Showtime is at 7:00 pm and admission (cash) at the door is $8.00 for members; $5.00 for students; and $10.00 for non-members.

 

Michael YuThe popular ‘Saturday Night Live’ series at Hoppin’ Johnz New South Cuisine (606 E. Colonial Ave.; 252-679-7716) features some of the region’s best solo entertainers, duos, and occasional trios on Saturday nights from 8:00-11:00 pm. On January 5, acoustic artist Michael Yu, with selections that cover the gamut from rock to folk music, will perform; on January 12, the four-member Home Bru will present an array of music from classic rock to contemporary to pop; on January 19, it’s Adam Nixon with his vintage country, rockabilly, rock and blues selections; and on January 26, award-winning Dahna Rowe, whose extensive repertory includes jazz, punk, rock, country, Americana, pop, top 40 and reggae, will perform.  FREE

 

SoPoz- BandGhost Harbor Brewing Company (Pailin's Alley – 606B E. Colonial Ave.; 252-599-1030) will host the crowd-pleasing duo Baker Street on Friday, January 4 from 8:00-11:00 pm; the energetic festival favorite reggae-rock-ska-dub band SoPoz on Wednesday, January 9 from 6:00-9:00 pm; the popular guitar duo Holly and Molly on Friday, January 11 from 7:00-10:00 pm; singer, songwriter and guitarist Chris Ride on Friday, January 18 from 7:00-10:00 pm; the duo ClusterGoat on Wednesday, January 23 from 6:00-9:00 pm; and The Acoustic Legend – Doc Perkins on Friday, January 25 from 7:00-10:00 pm.  FREE
